Cardiopulmonary engineering
Cardiopulmonary engineering research at Carnegie Mellon University advances cardiac, vascular, and pulmonary technologies with applications in both basic science and clinical care. Researchers work to develop new technologies and translate discoveries into practical applications, collaborating closely with the CMU Bioengineered Organs Initiative, the Next Manufacturing Center, and clinicians and researchers from medical centers.
Research in this area includes the development and testing of 3D biofabricated tissues and organs, as well as artificial hearts and lungs. Researchers also develop unique biomaterials, sensors, and manufacturing techniques to support these approaches.
